Why Do I Create This Content?

A behind-the-scenes on my goals & history with this brand.

Many of you have been following my content for quite a while, whether through the newsletter, Instagram, Twitter (X), or my blog.

I can’t tell you how appreciative I am of each one of you, even if all you do is consume my content.

I have been creating finance-related content for a little over a year now.

I think it’s time I pull the curtain back a bit and be more transparent about why I started and my short- and long-term goals.

How It All Began

I was a recent college graduate working as an engineer, making a solid paycheck.

I was extremely fortunate and grateful for the opportunity I was afforded so soon out of school.

Soon after starting this job, two things happened simultaneously:

  • I was introduced to investing through coworkers/friends who were into it

  • I began to dread the 9-5, work until you’re 65 paths of a traditional career

Thankfully, this introduction to investing got me hooked.

I couldn’t believe the financial opportunities that lay ahead through putting the money I already had to work.

I dove headfirst into consuming a ton of finance/investing-related content, reading books, and listening to podcasts.

Not to mention, I was shocked by the people around me (including older people) who never bothered investing or managing their own money.

This fueled a strong desire to help people better their finances and understand the power of simple wealth-building.

At the same time, disappointment with my 9-5 work life led me to search for alternatives.

I found content creation as a means to share what I loved, connect with others, and monetize it to be able to afford to leave my day job.

At first, I tried monetizing hobbies.

This included streaming video games on Twitch with friends and making cooking YouTube videos.

None of these panned out because I felt like I was taking the relaxation out of my hobby.

Combining these two massive shifts in my life led me to create My Money Marathon - focused on documenting my financial progress and helping others begin bettering their finances and building their wealth.

Where It’s Been

Of course, this business hasn’t always been exactly what you see now.

Businesses, goals, and methods change over time.

This brand was initially Finance & Fitness, focused on the financial side of things I focus on now and improving and tracking my fitness.

I quickly decided to leave this branding as I worried that, in the long term, it would be challenging to come up with unique fitness-related content.

Next came My 100K Marathon, inspired by a brand called Her First 100K. I liked the personal feeling of this brand name but felt it was limiting once I reached 100K (income, net worth, who knows).

Finally, I landed on My Money Marathon.

Even within the MMM brand, the focus shifted over time.

I went from:

Blogging → Instagram → Twitter → Newsletter → Coaching → Products → All except for blogging

Where It Is Now

At this point, I am creating content over various outlets, even creating content with other creators through podcast episodes, editing blog posts, and collaborating on products.

I am at a place where I feel confident that I can help people better their finances through my content and services.

Before, especially in the blogging days, I questioned how helpful I could be to people.

Now, I know I can help just about everyone, especially beginners, improve their finances.

Where It Is Going

I struggle to look into the long-term future of anything, including this brand. I feel too many variables are at play to accurately predict what you’ll want or need in the future.

The only exception to this is going full-time on content creation and quitting my day job.

That has been the only constant desire from the beginning.

However, I definitely have shifts I’d like to make in the short- and medium-term.

  • Leaning more toward YouTube/videos and coaching

    • YouTube, because I don’t have to spend as much time engaging once the product (video) is created compared to other social media, plus the ceiling of success seems to be higher.

    • Coaching because this is the best way to impact someone’s life genuinely.

  • Build a more extensive network of other creators to collaborate with and learn from

  • Develop stable income from my creations

I am genuinely looking forward to the future and wholeheartedly appreciate your support along the way.

As always, best of luck

-Evan
