🫵 Your most powerful asset: YOU

Investing in skills

At My Money Marathon, when we talk about investments, we usually mean:

  • The Stock Market

  • Real Estate

  • Bonds

  • ETFs

  • Cryptocurrency

These investments are very powerful for building wealth, especially passively.

However, regardless of what you invest your hard-earned money in, it isn’t your most powerful asset.

You are.

My Experience

This newsletter topic was inspired by my own situation and building my own skills.

Most recently, as many of you may know, I am nearing the end of a 30-day challenge focused on learning web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).

For the last 24 days, I have been learning something new, building a new tool, or expanding on the tool I build yesterday, and posting about my progress here.

I started this challenge because I thought it would be fun to learn (I have only had some experience with C++ and a lot with VBA for Office applications) and a great way to connect with new people.

Now, 24 days in, I realize how incredibly powerful his skill can be for me.

Building a website from scratch, monetizing an online tool, freelancing for other creators, upgrading my own site(s); the sky is the limit

This time investment will provide me with far more long-term value than if I had simply thrown my money into something. The sky is the limit on what I can do with this tool.

This is just one small example of how learning a new skill can greatly value your life.

I can imagine stacking this skill on other skills such as web design, copywriting, and content creation thtat I have learned along the way.

And the thing is, I didn’t take any courses to learn these skills.

I simply started, learning what I needed when I needed it.

You Have Infinite Potential

I know we all heard the “You can be anything you want to be” growing up. Now we’re jaded adults who see that as a huge lie.

However, even if you can’t be anything you want to be, there is certainly no ceiling on how effective you can be.

See, with every new skill you learn and tool you build, you are increasing your earning potential.

Think about it this way. Most day jobs are going to have an income ceiling that essentially no one will cross. It may be $50,000; it may be $120,000. Regardless, you will be capped.

However, if you instead invest time and money into building your experience, skills, and knowledge, you can do something like freelance or start a business where the only limit on your success is you.

On the other hand, if money isn’t your main concern but instead time is, you are still better off.

Most jobs will be at least 8 hours long, 5 or so days/week, with a pretty rigid schedule.

If you manage to stack skills on your most important asset (you), you can find ways to live a life outside of these constraints.

The Active & Passive Dynamic Duo

As mentioned, things like stocks and bonds are great for passive wealth generation. This way, all day long, whether you’re working or not, you are generating wealth.

The best thing to do is combine these passive returns with active income generation.

Of course, the higher you make this active income, the more powerful the combo.

Opening Doors

The more skills you gain, the more opportunities become available to you.

To stick with my personal example, learning HTML/CSS/JavaScript opens many doors for me. Even doors I don’t even know about yet.

Whatever skills you learn, you never know what the future will bring. You never know who you will meet, where you will go, or what you will do.

Stack skills to give yourself the best chance in the future.

My Point

I feel like I’m rambling a bit at this point because I feel so strongly about this. So let me clarify my point.

People overestimate external indicators of success, such as a career, the approval of others, and job-specific skills.

People underestimate the power of personal growth, such as a healthy mindset, skills (even seemingly unrelated ones), and creativity.

Focusing on this personal growth is what will get you closer to things like true happiness and the kind of wild success you hope for.

Trust and believe in yourself, and the rest will follow.
